Gerry’s Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road

More exploring from the family during Covid. We’re always after that ‘net-new’ experience, and today it was food-related. And today it was very special as it was Wifey’s birthday and her choice of dinner location. We’re all massively missing home #2 and of course home #1 for Wifey, so tonight we dine like Kings, Queens, Princes and Princess on Filipino fair. We truly do miss it so sitting outside in a BBQ stall just down the road from the house. So very sad not to be able to do that with our family all year due to this bloody Covid-19. But tonight we had something close as possible and we all chimed out that we wish our Philippines family was sat with us right at this time, right now.

Get there early though as no booking since Covid-19 and it is mental busy. We got there about 1730 to be certain and walked straight in. We left about 2030 and it was mobbed and there must have been 30 people in a queue at the front. It looked like a very busy Dr surgery.

This is;

Gerry’s Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road

Shall we hear from them 1st? Yes, let’s; “Here at Gerry’s, we aim to give everyone a pleasurable dining experience, serving only the freshest food ranging from Filipino favourites – Sisig, Inihaw na Pusit, Crispy Pata, Beef Kare-Kare, Adobo Shreds to exotic cuisines.

I have always dreamt of putting up a place where everyone could hang out and enjoy good food. With my passion for cooking and love for grilled dishes came Gerry’s. Although the original concept of my business was one where people could unwind with a drink or two, Gerry’s has become a family restaurant, too. Indeed, Gerry’s has come a long way–from my first restaurant located along Tomas Morato corner Eugenio Lopez Avenue in Quezon City, Gerry’s now has over 87 branches nationwide with two branches in Singapore, two branches in the United States, and in Doha, Qatar.

Up until now, we strive to continue to evolve, responding to the ever-growing needs of our customers. We believe in offering our customers the best value for their money. We also take pride in taking care of our people – one of our most valuable assets. These are the reasons why Gerry’s remains to be the favourite among Filipinos. For as long as we can, we guarantee nothing but great food and loads of fun.”

I have to assume it was Gerry himself that said these words. Well done Sir. With 87 branches you must be doing something right. One tiny little moan and groan for you though my friend from our experience today. At your branch in Singapore, you really need more Filipino’s front-of-house to deliver service-excellence. The service was lacking sadly today. No attention, almost being ignored at times despite vigorous arm-waving and nearly required whistling… Anyways let’s have a look shall we…?

And it begins – family K walk straight into this new foodie adventure. Looks at those happy smiley faces…

It really does feel, and even smell like being in the Philippines. Wafts of charring BBQ meat and fish fill the air. It’s really cool. Even Philippine’s water (AKA San Miguel) is being served. Don’t mind if I do thanks…
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
Some garlic rice to start thank you…
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
A stonking Bulalo – a clear beef broth with bone marrow and beef shin and and and… This was a damned fine version and was actually ordered by Jude Jude. Stunner.
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
One of my absolute favourites that you cannot go wrong with. Pork belly that is slow roast and then deep-fried. What could go wrong with that? Nothing. And have this with some ‘native’ sauce which we made ourselves – a little vinegar chili and soy – BOOM. This is Gerry’s Lechon Kawali.
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
Sorry, Gerry. This did not do it for me. It was sort of not fried texture. It was actually quite dry and is that 5-spice or cloves on there? I dunno, I absolutely love fried chicken skin, but this, sorry I did not. We left it and the plate went back 3/4 intact still. Chicken Chicharon Skin.
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
Yep, can you tell we massively over-ordered? Have a look at the size of the Lumpiang Shanghai. Damned good, just way too much. Loads of them haha. Superb with the Native Sauce, oh yes!!!
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
Oh no Gerry, another ‘let-down’. A Chef Hat recommended dish fro the menu and Wifey and #1’s least favourite. Whoopsy. And Wifey loves her BBQ chargrilled squid. This is Gerry’s Inihaw an Pusit. Perhaps we came on a ‘bad day’.
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
Back to quality now. WIfey & #1 read about this one, so great work Gerry’s – plus it looks blood amazing and rocked up sizzling like a plate from hell… Love it. This is Sizzling Bangus Sisig. AKA Milk FIsh. A beauty.
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
This really was a beauty this one and it is a veggie dish. Can this really be me stating that? It is stunning. So flavourful it is really an off-the-chart accompanying dish to your mains. Beautiful. This is Gerry’s Sizzling KangKong ‘w’ heaps of garlic – a belter!!!
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
And up next. are my two absolute favourites from today’s dinner. The beer food. This was kind of what I was expecting from the chicken skin, but this one over-exceeded expectation. I really could have ordered another despite being in a food coma. These little pork puff balls dipped in Native Sauce were a fuck-me food moment. Heavenly. Must order these if you come!!! ChichaBits. OMG!!!
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
And the partner for the off-the-charts ChichaBits is this beauty. This is just a crazy dish. Like seriously crazy. They have taken a beauty of a dish anyway and then shredded it and fried it to crispy. I mean, come on really? How can you not want to gorge on this with a San Mig? It is STELLAR!!! MUST ORDER!!! Garlic Adobo Shreds. My goodness!!!
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
And finally, we reach the end. Another Chef Hat recommendation and yeah, good. Very nice fried chicken. Perfect crunch on the skin and beautifully moist inside. Worth the hat guys. Gerry’s Fried Chicken.
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
A big thank you to Gerry’s Grill for allowing us to cut this beauty for the Wifey’s birthday. I did ask if you could do specials like cakes etc and you did advise no due to Covid-19, so I created my own and this was just up there with the best cake EVER. I wrote a whole blog about this #SooperLiciousCakes. GENIUS!!!
Gerry's Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road
And we finish with a VERY happy family from a brilliant dinner. Thanks, Gerry’s Grill ad crew. That was indeed awesome. Recommended by us and we’ll see you very soon.

If you have reached that point of needing your Filipina-fix. This is a good stopping point. Food was good, service was lacking and price pretty good. All in all, though it was a lovely Birthday dinner for Wifey and the family. I really enjoyed certain dishes, especially those that major on being beer food. Guys that was just brilliant. Gerry’s Grill @ 51 Cuppage Road was really good, it really was. Get there early though as the queue was insane when we left, to make sure you do – ENJOY!!!

Brian Kennett

Father of 3. All my kids are mixed, with English-Japanese, and English-Filipino - a recipe in the making there. I have been cooking since a small lad, as guided by my Nan and my Mum - gradually that morphed through exposure to Thai cooking from a lovely lady called Da in Margate. I used to hang out in her restaurant and watch the techniques. So the 1+1= greater than 2 occurred - Mum/Nan/Da - off I went in to the world of Asian cuisine. Moving to Asia in early 2000's clearly has brought that on somewhat - we travel continually, and eat locally and therefore have exposure to more and more new things. I have lived my dream and written a cook book whilst here, an amazing experience and all for a good cause too as I raised a lot of money for charity. My blog is now hopefully turning in to book number 2. Watch this space. I hope you enjoy my passion.
