Beer Basket @ Katong

I love getting recommendations for food and restaurants. It was my BFF Lou Denman’s turn today to be the referrer and boy did she make a good choice. I think this used to be a KTV back in the day, right next door to my hairdresser & beard trimming joint, Tux, in Katong just up fro Rabbit Carrot Gun. I had seen it during the week as well when I snuck there for a wee trim and it did look cool. So, Jude Jude had his trial for additional Chinese lessons today so we were in Katong anyway. Perfect timing to try this gaff out. And I have to say I am so glad we actually did. And therefore today we did visit a newbie to East Coast, we visited;

I am liking the look of this place right from the get-go. Minimalist and very funky decor. Gets my vote!!!

And so does this. Holy shit. And I thought the variety at Colbar was varied. 4 draft on too. But check out these beers, ales and ciders – they even had candy floss milkshake IPA, I kid you not!!! An insane choice of beers. We will be coming back to here again and again that’s for certain.

1st up was some snacks – well you got to get some selection going right? Buttermilk Fried Chicken Bites – with a devilishly spicy sauce akin to a tartar sauce but punching above it’s weight on the chili frontage. AKA Jalapeno Mayo ‘w’ Chives.

These were cracking. The Portobello Mushroom Fritters with a simply delicious dipping sauce of Lemon & Garlic Aioli. Bloody brilliant these were. Super good.

Here cometh Wifey’s order for lunch. How good does that look? Super-fresh, you can just tell. Grilled Shrimp Tacos. Salt & Pepper Shrimps ‘w’ Salad & a Kaffir Lime Mayo.

Jude Jude goes hard on the Classic Burger. Toasted Brioche, Lettuce, Tomato, Bacon, Cheese, BBQ Sauce… BOOM – winner. He ate every single morsel of this and believe me it was bloody huge. Good work Jude Jude.

#1 and I both went for this thing of beauty. Like a Kofta but in a burger. Genius, and so very very tasty. A belter of a burger. The Moroccan Lamb Burger, which comes with Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and Mint Mayo. WOW!!! I like a lot…

Strawberry Blonde decided to go for one of her favourites of Fish n Chips. I got Wifey to do her Filipina freshness test on the fish and she was VERY impressed with the freshness but also the fish itself – huge big flakes, so something like Cod. Strawberry Blonde said it was fantastic and again completely cleared every single scrap of food from her plate.

And all in all for all the food and all the drinks we walked away with a bill of about $160. Very $$ reasonable too. Great atmosphere. Very family-friendly. A crazy amount of beer and cider choices and great food, really great food. Very impressed with Beer Basket @ Katong. We’ll be back for sure. What a cracking place. Thanks again to Lou for the introduction. Loved it. You will too – ENJOY!!!

Father of 3. All my kids are mixed, with English-Japanese, and English-Filipino - a recipe in the making there. I have been cooking since a small lad, as guided by my Nan and my Mum - gradually that morphed through exposure to Thai cooking from a lovely lady called Da in Margate. I used to hang out in her restaurant and watch the techniques. So the 1+1= greater than 2 occurred - Mum/Nan/Da - off I went in to the world of Asian cuisine. Moving to Asia in early 2000's clearly has brought that on somewhat - we travel continually, and eat locally and therefore have exposure to more and more new things. I have lived my dream and written a cook book whilst here, an amazing experience and all for a good cause too as I raised a lot of money for charity. My blog is now hopefully turning in to book number 2. Watch this space. I hope you enjoy my passion.
