The Latest Tiong Bahru Outlet is based in Siglap

As you all know Siglap is a favourite haunt of the Is Life a Recipe crew and so when we heard in 2022 Tiong Bahru Bakery was setting up on our manor we added it to the long list of places we need to try!

Fast forward and here we are in early January 2023, why on earth have we still not been here yet!? Tiong Bahru Raffles City has always been a favourite go to when at Raffles City for coffee meetings whiling the day away as the odd pastry mid afternoon always goes down a treat!

Who is the owner of Tiong Bahru Bakery?

Many people think it was set up by a French Chef but in fact it was set up by an incredibly successful businesswoman called Cynthia Chua the founder of Spa Esprit, Browhaus and Strip!

Cynthia Chua and Gontran Cherrier, a French master baker, came up with the idea for the firm and collaborated to start it. Paul Albert, who is both a baker and a mad scientist, is in charge of the baking operations at the Tiong Bahru Bakery.

Now here it gets mind blowing! Cynthia was behind the Tippling Club back in 2008, which is one of Brian’s favourites (he has a man crush on Ryan Clift), Remember the review Brian did on Noka? Yes, Cynthia again is behind the scenes there as well!

How about Common Man Coffee Roasters or Forty Hands, you know these amazing coffee places? Yep, both of those brands! I did a post last year on Bonchinche Restaurant, yet another surprise in her repetoir!

And that’s just the F&B stuff, we can go on but this post is about Tiong Bahru Bakery, so let’s roll!

What is famous in Tiong Bahru Bakery?

Almond Croissant

What is so special about Tiong Bahru Bakery?

Tiong Bahru Bakery is widely regarded as one of the top bakery businesses in Singapore due to the artisanal baked products that it produces. Their baked goods, such as the Kouign Amann, Croissant, and Tarts, have a scrumptious flavor and a wonderful aroma.

The name derives from the Breton words for cake ("kouign") and butter ("amann"). Kouign-amann is a speciality of the town Douarnenez in Finistère, Brittany, where it originated in around 1860

Their Kouign Amman is a favorite among customers because it is wonderfully crisp, flavorful, and indulgent. They now operate 12 Tiong Bahru outlets across the island and consistently get positive feedback from customers like me!

Let’s dig into the Viennoiserie?

The what? I hear you say! Those delicious pastries you love to eat there such as the the Croissant are in fact called Viennoiserie! According to the famous culinary school Cordon Blue “Viennoiserie is the ‘bridge’ between pâtisserie and French bread”.

Well, you learn something everyday on Is Life a Recipe!

The English and French have always had a divide and I am not talking the English Channel! The language, food, football, you name it there is banter or on occasion war, all of which the English have won (wars that is, food not so much)! Go on Google French Military Victories! Here I did that for you anyway!

What on earth are you going on about now Spencer?

Well the English refer to the French as Frogs as they eat Frogs legs and we typically don’t! The French call the English in retaliation they call us The Roast Beef on account of the amount of cos we eat! aka Les Rosbifs!

The idea of a Roast Beef Croissant Sandwich made me laugh so much I just had to order one!

Coffee is Coffee is Coffee!

I am not going to lecture you on types of coffee here with crap like where its made etc but take a look at the extensive list of Coffee types they offer!
