Pang Taqueria Review: A Michelin Bib Gourmant Mexican in Taiwan

PANG TAQUERIA REVIEW: Literally, tucked away in Taipei’s Da’an District, Pang Taqueria might be small in size, but it’s making big waves in the local food scene due to its exquisite and ever so authentic Mexican food. So much so that our friends from Michelin have awarded then with a Bib Gourmand. Rock n Rolls guys!!!

With its vibrant orange tables and an open kitchen (my favourite), the atmosphere is more laid-back lunch spot than fine dining. However, don’t let the casual setting fool you; the food here is anything but ordinary. Chef Charles Chen, a self-confessed Americophile, brings his fine-dining experience to the table, crafting tacos that are both authentic and innovative. The cochinita pibil taco, featuring slow-cooked pork shoulder, house-made habanero salsa, and hibiscus-pickled onion, is a standout, offering layers of rich, complex flavours that you will find are hard to forget. ​

PANG TAQUERIA 点评:Pang Taqueria 坐落于台北大安区,虽然规模不大,但凭借其精致正宗的墨西哥美食,在当地美食界掀起了一股热潮。正因如此,我们米其林的朋友们才授予它“必比登推介”的称号。摇滚吧,伙计们!!!

餐厅里,鲜艳的橙色餐桌和开放式厨房(我的最爱),与其说是高级餐厅,不如说更像是一个轻松的午餐地点。然而,别被这轻松的环境所迷惑;这里的食物绝非普通。自诩为“亲美派”的主厨 Charles Chen,将他的高级餐饮经验带到餐桌上,精心制作出既地道又富有创意的墨西哥卷饼。其中,以慢炖猪肩肉、自制哈瓦那辣椒莎莎酱和芙蓉花腌洋葱为特色的墨西哥烤猪肩肉卷饼尤为引人注目,层次丰富、口感复杂,令人难以忘怀。​

What sets Pang apart is its commitment to quality and authenticity. The corn tortillas are made in-house daily from locally-grown corn, providing a perfect base for the array of fillings. The elote, a grilled corn salad with crumbly feta, onion, cilantro, and a spicy crema, is another must-try, with its addictive smokiness achieved by individually blowtorching each serving. 

It’s no surprise that Pang has earned a spot in the Michelin Guide Taiwan 2024 as a Bib Gourmand selection, recognizing its good quality and value. So, if you’re in Taipei and craving Mexican fare that hits all the right notes, Pang Taqueria is right up there, as you will soon find out, folks…

You may have seen the recent Medium Article from Islifearecipe.net, see above. Well, a colleague of mine read that. His lovely lady is Mexican and he recently asked for a Mexican restaurant recommendation in Singapore, somwhere with authentic Mexican food. I recommended Nixta but he had been before. I also recommended our mates at Mami’s Tamales – they went and they loved it.

Then they read our Best Mexican Restaurants in Asia review on Medium. This review contains Michelin Mexican Restaurants, including Pang Taqueria, Papi’s Tacosand so on. By chance He happened to be with his lovely lady in Taiwan, so off they trotted…

With the enormous range of culinary delights in Taiwan, my first thought is always to indulge in dumplings, beef noodles, and pineapple tarts, washed down with some milk tea. Tacos are not something my mind wanders to when asked what’s for dinner in Taipei. However, when the food extraordinaire Mr Brian Kennett mentioned that there was a great Taco place in Taipei, I had to try. Conveniently, when his write up on IsLifeARecipe for Best Mexican food in Asia dropped, I was in Taipei. I took this for a sign that the gods of food were smiling on me, and I had to give this a try.

On a warm Sunday afternoon, we strolled into Pang Tacos, in downtown Taipei and were quickly seated. There is a waiting list, but we managed to get there right on opening time and avoid the inevitable queues that come with a Michelin rated resturant.

The menu is simple and heavily focused on the taco. This isn’t your 2 for 1 frozen margaritas Mexican, this is the real deal taco, Mexican street food style. We ordered one of each of the tacos as we wanted to see how the chefs approached this.

Pang Taqueria: Elote Corn

We started with charred corn, feta, and the chefs own spicy sauce. Once mixed, this tasted like it had come straight from a Mexican street corner. A great start, and a good sign of what was to come.

When the tacos arrived, we knew this was legit. The tortillas were corn, and not flour. A small detail, but if ain’t corn, it ain’t authentic. We started with the chicken, and quickly reached for the range of condiments and garnishes that came complimentary with the meal. The sauces had citrus and chillies blended in, and were all home made. Nothing from the many ubiquitous hot sauce brands you see adorning the tables of most Mexican eateries.

The flavours were authentic, and bursting with flavour. The sauces added a nice touch of spice and zest, and everything felt balanced and no single flavour dominated the dish.

玉米饼上桌时,我们就知道这道菜绝对正宗。玉米饼是用玉米做的,而不是面粉做的。虽然细节不多,但如果不是玉米,那就不是正宗的。我们先点了鸡肉,然后很快又点了套餐附赠的各种调味品和装饰。酱汁里混合了柑橘和辣椒,而且都是自制的。跟大多数墨西哥餐馆餐桌上常见的各种辣酱品牌完全不一样。

味道正宗,风味浓郁。酱汁增添了一丝辛辣和果香,所有的味道都平衡得恰到好处,没有一种味道会盖过整道菜的口味。

Pang Taqueria Review: Trio Taco

We moved on to the heavier flavours in the pulled pork and also the trio taco, which had chorizo, pork, and pig intestine. A creative combo that added a definite local Taiwanese touch to a classic Mexican dish. Def one of the standouts and a great example of a fusion dish from the chef.

我们接着品尝了口味更重的手撕猪肉和三重塔可,塔可里有西班牙辣香肠、猪肉和猪肠。这道创意组合在经典墨西哥菜中融入了浓郁的台湾本土风味。绝对是这道菜的佼佼者,也是主厨融合菜肴的典范。

Pang Taqueria Lamb Taco

I closed out with the lamb taco, taking the view that most lamb cuts in Asia have a strong flavour, but to my pleasant surprise, it was very balanced and the confit had a beautiful mint flavour. Lamb and mint being comfort food for me, I was in heaven.

最后我点了羊肉塔可,虽然觉得亚洲的羊肉大多味道浓烈,但出乎意料的是,这道塔可的口感非常均衡,油封羊肉还散发着美妙的薄荷香味。羊肉和薄荷对我来说是一道暖心美食,简直是天堂。

Have to say this was one of the most unexpected resturant visits in Taipei, but one I was very glad I made. Highly recommend Pang Tacos and Chef Charles Chen’s fare. Whether you just feel like some good quality and authentic Mexican, or looking to see why they (deservingly) won a Michelin accolade.

Pang Taqueria proves that good things really do come in small, tortilla-wrapped packages, in a tiny little place. With house-made corn tortillas, pork that falls apart if you so much as look at it funny, and a grilled corn salad that could cause actual arguments at the table, it’s clear they’re serious about their food without taking themselves too seriously.

It’s bright, it’s bold, it’s the kind of place where you leave with salsa on your shirt and absolutely no regrets. If all tacos tasted like this, we’d be campaigning for them to be their own food group and franchise…
