Common Man Night Shift – Joo Chiat – Review 2023

Common Man Night Shift: A New Late-Night Spot for Natural Wine and Good Food in Joo Chiat

Common Man Night Shift Common Man Night Shift - Joo Chiat - Review 2023

Common Man Coffee Roasters is a well-known name in the Singapore cafe scene, and their new late-night spot, Common Man Night Shift who took over from the Drunken Farmer, is quickly becoming a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

The restaurant is located in the heart of Joo Chiat, a charming neighborhood known for its Peranakan heritage.

Common Man Night Shift is open from 6pm to 10pm weekdays and until 11pm on Friday and Saturday, and the menu features a variety of small plates and larger dishes, all designed to pair perfectly with the natural wines on offer. The wine list is extensive with wines from all over the world, and the staff are knowledgeable and happy to help you choose the perfect wine to match your meal.

Common Man Night Shift Menu Options

The food at Common Man Night Shift is just as impressive as the wine list. The dishes are creative and flavourful, and the ingredients are sourced from local suppliers whenever possible. Some of the highlights of the menu include the Green Hummus or Labneh each costing $12 to kick off starters, or for mains to share how about the Duck Fois Gras Pie $38 or for the more health conscious the Pazanella, Roma Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Charred cherry tomatoes, sourdough, croutons, chives, basil, peanut & sesame brittle with mustard dressing for $18?

Dessert? Oh go on then!

Okinawa Black Sugar Tiramisu $16 or the Yuzu Cheesecake $14 (or both?)

The Okinawa Black Sugar Tiramisu blends the classic charm of an age-old Italian dessert with the remarkable attributes of kokuto, or Okinawan black sugar. At its core, it carries the familiar layered richness of tiramisu, but surprises with a striking note of black sugar, which adds a subtle, nuanced sweetness and an exciting depth of flavour

On the other side of the sweet spectrum, we found the Yuzu Cheesecake, a harmonious blend of the tangy citrus notes of yuzu fruit and the creamy richness of a classic cheesecake. The yuzu adds a refreshing, zestful twist, creating a sensory balance that ensures each bite is an invigorating, yet decadently creamy experience.

The choice between Okinawa Black Sugar Tiramisu and Yuzu Cheesecake is certainly challenging. Both desserts offer a unique spin on beloved classics. While the tiramisu draws you in with its earthy sweetness and unexpected health benefits, the cheesecake counters with its luscious creaminess, made all the more enticing by a burst of yuzu’s vibrant citrus character.

So we had both!

Atmosphere

In addition to the food and wine, Common Man Night Shift also has a great atmosphere. The restaurant is spacious and airy, with plenty of natural light. The walls are decorated with artwork from local artists, and the overall vibe is relaxed and inviting.

Whether you’re looking for a special place to celebrate a special occasion or a casual spot to enjoy a glass of wine with friends, Common Man Night Shift is the perfect place. The food, wine, and atmosphere are all top-notch, and you’re sure to have a great time.
