The best Britain has to offer in Pie and Mash Restaurants: a Review of FIFTY
Pie and Mash: a Review of Britain’s Finest (and one Ozzie). Blimey, if you ain’t had a proper plate of pie and mash, you’ve been missin’ out on a right good East-end knees-up for your gob! Now, I ain’t talkin’ about any ol’ pie, mind you, but the kind that’s been fillin’ up bellies down the East End since Queen Vic was on the throne.
You see, back in the day, when the streets were paved with cobbles and the chimney sweeps were chattin’ away in their Cockney rhyming slang, pie and mash (pie ‘n’ mash) was the staple for us lot who needed a cheap and cheerful bit of grub to get us through a long day of graft.
Now, let’s get down to brass tacks, shall we? This dish was the bees’ knees long before fancy gastropubs tried to posh it up. Originally, the pies were filled with eels caught straight from the River Thames—what with it bein’ easier to get your mitts on ‘em than the cow’s mince we stuff ‘em with today. Paired with a pile of creamy mashed spuds and topped with a dollop of parsley liquor, it’s the kind of meal that warms your cockles and makes you feel like you’ve just had a cuddle from your dear old mum.
So, if you fancy a bit of East End history on a plate, and don’t mind a bit of jellied eel on the side, then pie and mash is the way to go, my son. Grab a fork and get stuck in, ‘cause this ain’t just a meal—it’s a slice of London itself. And don’t forget, as they say in Cockney, “Have a butcher’s at this! You won’t Adam and Eve how good it is!” ENJOY!!!

Robert went on to be one of London’s most successful entrepreneurs and when he was 21, he opened his first outlet on Sclatter Street, Brick Lane. This was the first time he started trading under the Cooke brand that we see today and F Cooke was born. It was at this point he made a name for himself by selling stewed eels with mashed potato and liquor.
In 1890 Robert opened up a second shop at 40 Watney Street, E1 and by 1892 Robert ventured south of the river to Bermondsey where he opened up at 87 Bermondsey New Road, which is now known as Tower Bridge Road, SE1.
Robert and his wife Martha had three children, Robert, Amy and Fred, to add to their existing offspring. As soon as they were old enough it was natural for the children to follow in their fathers’ footsteps and open their own shops, keeping the family legacy. In 1900 they had opened up in Broadway Market, Hackney E8. This shop was shut down for seven years in 1940 after the original facia was blown out during the Second World War. From there Robert went on to 158 Horseferry Road, SW1, while Fred opened yet another shop in Kingsland High Street, E8 in 1910.
By 1939 the Cooke brothers had a total of five shops. In 1991, the shop on Kingsland High Street became a grade II listed and the Broadway market shop followed suit and became grade II listed in 2018. In 2010, Bob’s daughter Emma Cooke opened up in Romford and in 2020, Bob’s son Robert Cooke opened Chelmsford’s first traditional pie and mash shop on Moulsham Street. They say: “The Goddard’s Pie and Mash business was founded in 1890 by Alfred Goddard (AJ Goddard) in Evelyn Street, Deptford, London. Alfred worked hard to build up his business and his reputation during the early years when pie mash and liquor shops really started to become popular. Alfred passed the business to his two sons Robert (Bob) and George in 1936.
In 1952, another shop was opened in Greenwich at the same time as the Cutty Sark was placed in dry dock. For a time, pies were cooked at AJ Goddards in Deptford and transported by van to Greenwich. After a couple of years the two brothers decided to take one shop each and Bob Goddard (our grandfather) took the Greenwich shop while his brother remained in Deptford. In 1972, Bob and his wife decided to retire and passed the Pie House to his eldest son, Dave Goddard and his wife Pam.
Greenwich was a very busy place even back then and the Goddard’s name was very well known for hot and tasty pie and mash.
Jeff and Kane established Goddard’s Pies with business partner Sean Horton. This continues to run as a successful business that provides pie mash and liquor and handmade pies to the trade, with daily deliveries going to cafes, restaurants, hotels, wholesalers and other pieshops.
After a long search, the perfect property was found in Greenwich enabling them to return to the family trade of running a busy pie and mash shop. 22 King William Walk is located in the centre of Greenwich just by Greenwich Market and starts the next family era of Goddard’s pie and mash. Our pies are all handmade using the very best ingredients to the Goddard family recipes.”

They. say: “Harringtons have been serving traditional Pie, Mash and Liquor across generations in and around the London area for over 100 YEARS and are one of the most favourite pie makers to many.
Number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting became Harrington’s Pie & Mash shop in the spring of 1908 when it was bought by Bertie John Harrington and his wife Clara and with two small children in tow, Bertrum and George, 26 year old Bertie Harrington moved from Limehouse and set up shop down south, serving pie and mash to the SW17 community for the next 31 years until his death at 57 in 1939.
At the time of his arrival in Tooting, industrial air pollution tended to be worse in the east and south of the city due to the prevailing westerly wind, this naturally contributed to the reason why the working classes settled in these parts of the city, while the west was home to the affluent minority. The working class favoured foodstuffs that were cheap, in plentiful supply, and easy to prepare.
The good old fashioned savoury pie has long been a traditional food, and its small hand-sized form also made it a transportable meal, protected from dirt by its cold pastry crust. European eels baked in a pastry crust became a common worker’s meal since eels were one of the few forms of fish that could survive in the heavily polluted river Thames and London’s other rivers at that time.
Supply was plentiful through to the late 1800s, particularly from the Dutch fishing boats landing catches at Billingsgate fish market. Adding cheap mashed potatoes made it a plate-based sit-down meal, and a sauce made of the water used to cook the eels, coloured and flavoured by parsley – the liquor – made the whole dish something very special.”

LUCY'S PIE AND MASH
Lucy’s Pie and Mash is a cozy little spot, just over the road from my Mum’s house, that feels like a warm hug from your mum or nan—if your nan happened to be a whiz in the kitchen with a knack for perfecting the East End’s finest comfort food. The pies at Lucy’s are something special: I believe that’s because they come from the legends that are Manze’s Pie and Mash (franchise it seems…).
The mash is silky smooth, with just enough butter to make it rich without being overwhelming, and the parsley liquor? It’s the kind of thing you could happily drown your sorrows in—if you weren’t too busy mopping it up with every bite of pie.
But what really sets Lucy’s apart is the atmosphere. There’s a genuine warmth to the place in Margate-town, from the cheerful chatter of the staff to the way everyone seems to know each other, giving it the feel of a true local’s haunt.
It’s the sort of spot where you can sit down for a meal and end up in a conversation with the next table over, Lucy’s Pie and Mash offers a pie and mash experience that’s as heartwarming as the food itself.
MANZE'S
Manze’s Pie & Mash is a true institution, a place where the history of London’s culinary scene comes alive with every bite. Established in 1902, Manze’s has been serving up its legendary pies for over a century, and the quality has remained consistently high.
Manze’s pies feature handmade pastry created fresh in their shops every day. That light, flaky crust is then filled with minced beef sourced from the freshest prime cuts. No filler meats or offal are used, ever. A modest amount of gravy is added to each pie before the pie receives its top layer of pastry and is sent to the oven for cooking in the traditional manner.
For those that wish to enjoy their delicious pies without the inclusion of meat, a vegan version made with soya mince is also available (cough, move on please…).
Manze’s pie and mash just would not seem complete without a generous serving of liquor to round things out. They add a secret, proprietary ingredient that provides their parsley sauce with a savoury significance your taste buds will never forget. All their liquor is made fresh in their shops on the day that it’s sold. And you can taste the freshness: man I like that!!!
The Manze’s Eels have been a component of the British table for more than 200 years. They’re true ‘local’ cuisine in every sense of the word. The eels you’ll get from M.Manze are delivered fresh to their shops every day and prepared on the premises. Flavourful and mouthwatering, they’re a nationwide favourite.
They say: “The founder of M.Manze, Michele Manze, arrived in Britain at the tender age of 3 from Ravello in Southern Italy. His parents brought the family here looking for a better life and set about putting their industrious nature to work.
When he was just 27 Michele purchased his father-in-law’s pie & mash shop in Bermondsey and the rest is London culinary history. While the number of M.Manze-owned Pie & Mash shops has fluctuated over the years, it has held steady at 3 for the past 2 decades.”
Manze’s have three locations, but let’s focus at Tower Bridge, the grandpapa: The Tower Bridge shop is the flagship of the M.Manze Pie & Mash empire. First opened near the end of the 19th century by one Robert Cooke, it was purchased by Cooke’s son-in-law, Michele Manze, in 1902. The Tower Bridge shop has carved out a significant place in the gastronomic history of the area.
But it’s also earned a place in British popular culture appearing in numerous books, TV shows, and films, and formed the backdrop for Elton John’s music video for his single ‘Made in England’. They say: “Like most established Pie and Mash shops, this one has passed through generations with the same recipe as it was many years ago, more than a century in this case. Our Great Grandfather was the skipper of an eel barge sailing out of a town called Heeg, in a marsh like region of the Netherlands. Eels were in abundance there due to its location on the Heegermeer Lake. Until 1938 eels were exported from there to London and landed at the Dutch Mooring on the Thames.
Trade was so important with London that the primary schools in the town taught English to all pupils. His youngest son Huite (known to everyone as Pop), one of 11 children, was brought to London circa 1894 at the age of 9 and left with a family who had a pie shop to learn the trade and work in the business in exchange for his room and keep. He opened his first shop in Hoxton with a cousin just before the outbreak of The Great War and within a few years met and married the daughter of another pie shop owner by the name of Earnest Newton.
When his cousin pulled out of the business he relocated, in 1926, with a loan from his father-in-law, to the Bow Road in a parade of shops which were predominantly occupied by Dutch (including the Bird in Hand Public House). The only stipulation made was that the shop was called E. Newtons. There is one solitary photo of the opening week.
Now established as part of the Leytonstone landscape, the family have been trading here for 44 years to date, still using the identical recipe for both the pies and liquor.
Like most long standing Pie and Mash shops, we use best quality beef, boned and minced by ourselves to avoid the pitfalls of buying ready minced meat. In keeping with tradition, everything is freshly made on the premises including the jellied eels (we are one of the only shops left in the country that keeps live eels), the pastry, and even the vinegar used on the tables. No preservatives or artificial flavourings are used, just the same natural ingredients that were available at the turn of the last Century.”

London Pie and Mash Restaurants Conclusions
So there you have it, me old china—pie and mash, a dish that’s as London as a red bus stuck in traffic on the Old Kent Road. Whether you’re a born and bred Cockney or just lookin’ for a bit of the ol’ foodie razzle-dazzle, this ain’t no pigs’ ear of a meal. It’s a proper nosh-up that’ll leave you grinnin’ like a Cheshire cat, and you’ll be singin’ its praises louder than a market trader floggin’ his wares on Petticoat Lane.
As you tuck into that last mouthful of pie, mash, and liquor, you might just find yourself feelin’ a bit more connected to the Big Smoke and its colourful history. And remember mate, when it comes to pie and mash, don’t be a dustbin lid—get yourself down to your local and have a taste of what’s kept this city goin’ for generations. Now, off you trot, get on your plates of meat, down the apples and pears, and make sure you’ve got your mince pies peeled for a bit of East End flavour!
However, joking aside. What I find totally sad about the Pie and Mash Shop industry is that it is clearly a dying business. So many have closed that I have no included in this blog. The first list was SEVENTY FIVE Pie and Mash Shops. Now, FIFTY and some of that FIFTY have closed.
Another observation is that I can’t see the shops helping themselves to stay ‘alive’. Over 90% don’t have a website. That 90% have a crappy Facebook page with no updates, menus, limited pictures, and so on. It seems they rely on the footfall that has been coming for years, which is sadly dying, like a lot of the shops.
You guys need to promote, to create a heritage presence, attract new footfall including tourism, and become the cool restaurant kids on the block for visitors aligned to Cockney heritage and legacy. Islifearecipe.net wishes you well!!! We have the same issues here in Singapore with our beloved hawkers… We hope this blog helped in some way for you!!!
