The Fish & Chips Shop at Katong i12

Fish and Chips are a staple of the British food scene and in Singapore there is only one traditional British Fish and Chips company, Smiths Fish and Chips who we have done a review on before and remains our firm favourite so we always recommend them when talking about Fish and Chips but every now and then something pops up that’s worth a try!

I came across The Fish & Chips Shop a while back and vowed to come back and today had the chance to give them a try and was in fact blown away by the quality and level they went to to mirror traditional Fish and Chips!

The Fish & Chip Shop has a limited online presence but it seems they are part of the same group as Eat at My kitchen at Dempsey.

As you can see from the menu above the offering is limited. I opted for the simple Fish & Chips at $16 and was not disappointed.

The Fish & Chip Shop portion size is good with two pieces of fish and a healthy portion of Chips (that’s what we call Fries in the UK). Two sides of Sauce, Heinz Ketchup Not the Malaysian tomato sauce crap that Coffee Bean give outs) and a portion or Tartare sauce. Heinz Vinegar was provided, nice touch on that, the only way to better that would be to supply Sarson’s vinegar!

The Brits not only love Fish & Chips but a good cup of Tea, so when I checked if I could bring my own Tea i was thrilled to learn it was ok, now see my FUN Toast tea aka Teh in this picture!

The Fish

The Fish and Chip Shop Taman Fish

The Fish & Chip Shop staff told me the fish was a Taman Fish but I cant find anything on such a fish only the Tamban Fish, so until I return I am unsure what fish this is but it’s not Code for sure! The batter was incredibly crispy and they even provided the break away batter from the frying oil, which added another layer of bite complexity.

The Fish and Chip Shop Frying Fish

The Fish flaked like Cod but was not sweet like Cod but still hit the mark for me!

The Fish & Chip Shop Conclusion

I found this a good fix for my fish and chips and will certainly have this again in the future. The Fish was not as good as Smith’s Fish and Chips but the batter certainly made up for it. The Chips were also very well fried and fluffy on the inside. I think on the next visit I’ll try toe Appleslaw even though it is not a traditional side dish for us Brits!
