First Impressions

Tucked along Bedok Road, Happy Dining Seafood (喜来聚海鲜) doesn’t immediately scream “fine dining” — but don’t let that fool you. Step inside and you’ll find bright lighting, clean tables, and a fridge stocked with every drink imaginable, from Coca-Cola Zero to Chinese herbal teas. The shelves lined with Moutai and Guojiao 1573 bottles give away its mainland Chinese roots — this is the kind of place that families and regulars know about but tourists rarely stumble into.

The decor is fuss-free, a mix of rattan and wooden furniture, with walls painted in cheerful aquatic blues. The restaurant name says it all — Happy Dining — because the focus here is squarely on comfort food, bold flavours, and shared plates meant for the table, not Instagram.

The Menu at a Glance

The extensive menu reads like a love letter to classic Chinese home-style seafood and grill fare. Categories range from “Tin Foil Specialties” (锡纸篇) and “BBQ Grill 篇” to hearty soups, noodles, and stir-fried dishes. You’ll find:

  • Seafood mains like steamed fish, crayfish, and prawns (prices “Ask 时价” – market rate).
  • BBQ skewers and grilled meats starting from $6.
  • Tofu & Vegetable dishes between $8 – $15.
  • Signature hotplates & wok dishes reaching $58 or more for premium seafood.
  • Cold appetisers galore — century-egg tofu, marinated jellyfish, spicy kimchi and more.

It’s a big menu, but well-organised, offering something for everyone whether you’re here for a quick beer with lamb skewers or a full seafood feast.

What We Ate

Pidan Tofu – Century Egg with Silken Tofu

1) 皮蛋豆腐 (Pidan Tofu – Century Egg with Silken Tofu) – $8

A classic Chinese starter done right. The tofu arrives perfectly chilled and sliced neatly like dominoes, layered around diced century egg, garlic, and scallions. A drizzle of light soy and chilli oil ties everything together. It’s smooth, savoury, and slightly spicy — a refreshing way to open the meal.

Dry Pot Baby Cabbage with chilli and garlic

2) 干锅娃娃菜 (Dry Pot Baby Cabbage with Chilli and Garlic) – $10

Served sizzling in a mini steel wok, this dish was a knockout. The cabbage is lightly charred, bathed in spicy chilli oil with sesame seeds and diced peppers. It tastes clean — less oily, more fragrant.

Cumin-scented grilled lamb ribs

3) 烤羊排 (Grilled Lamb Ribs) – $16 for 4 pieces

The surprise hit of the night. Marinated and deep-fried till crisp, dusted with cumin and sesame. Juicy inside, crunchy outside — everything you want when snacking with friends. At $4 a piece, they’re excellent value — easily comparable to the popular BBQ Box lamb skewers. A must-order if you like your meats smoky and rich.

Crispy fried barramundi with soy and herbs

4) 金目鲈 (Steamed or Fried Barramundi) – $28

The star dish: whole fried barramundi, crispy outside yet flaky within, resting in a pool of dark soy and topped with spring onions and coriander. Prefer it steamed? That’s available too — but frying locks in flavour and gives that addictive crunch along the fins. Pair with rice and an icy Tsingtao and dinner’s sorted.

5) 中国茶 (Chinese Tea) & 可口可乐 无糖 (Coke Zero)

Balance matters: we ordered a pot of Chinese tea ($2) and a Coke Zero ($2). The tea cuts through the lamb and fish richness, while the Coke Zero keeps things modern — old meets new.

Value for Money

Our total bill came to $72.60 for two people, inclusive of service charge — four substantial dishes plus drinks. For the portion sizes, that’s excellent value. In many popular zi char and seafood spots across the East, a similar spread can easily cross $100.

Service and Atmosphere

Service was friendly and efficient. Dishes arrived promptly, and staff checked in mid-meal — a nice touch for a neighbourhood joint. The vibe is laid-back: families chatting, groups sharing beers, delivery riders popping in. It feels authentic, lived-in, and genuinely local — the kind of place you can visit weekly.
