KTMW Katong Mei Wei Chicken Rice opened a new outlet at East Village back in 2023, building on the long-standing reputation of their original location at 865 Mountbatten Rd, Katong Shopping Centre, which has been in business for over 30 years. Known for serving up good, honest chicken rice, the restaurant sticks to its tried-and-tested formula at this new spot. When we moved into the hood we just had to drop by to try

The Experience

We ordered the Regular Chicken Rice ($7.50), which was served with tender steamed chicken and fragrant rice. The turmeric yellow rice was well-cooked and fluffy, pairing nicely with the chicken, which was soft and juicy. Two sauces—chilli and soy-based—came with the meal, adding a good bit of extra flavour. What I really enjoyed was the extra coriander and crispy shallots giving the taste a big boost.

We did this as a take away to each at home and I must say we were both pleasantly surprised at how good this was, it’s not staunch traditional Hainanese Style Chicken rice but its bloody damn good none the less!

If you’re after more, they offer larger sharing portions like the Quarter Chicken ($16.80) and Whole Chicken ($40.00), ideal for families or groups.

To go alongside the chicken rice, you can try a few sides, including the Karaage Fried Chickens ($7.50). The fried chicken has a nice crisp to it and made for a solid addition to the meal. The Salted Fish Beansprouts ($6.00) are simple but done well, providing a crunchy contrast to the other dishes.

The drinks menu offers a few refreshing options, and the Rose Elderflower Ice Shaken Tea ($5.60) was a decent choice, not too sweet and with a light, floral touch.
