French Fold Great World – Buckwheat Galettes, Classic Crêpes & What I Should Have Ordered

French Fold Great World
Quick take: I tasted two dishes at French Fold Great WorldNo.12 Reblochon galette and the No.21 classic crêpe. One was a belter, the other a lesson in sticking to tradition vs being adventurous. There’s beer on tap to keep Chef Kenno smiling, mocktails that could use a rethink, and a fit‑out that’s fresh, pastel‑green and breezy.

First impressions & décor at French Fold Great World

French Fold Great World leans into soft pastel green, blonde wood and gentle lighting. The space reads modern Paris café rather than heavy bistro—airy, uncluttered and pleasant for both solo crêpe‑and‑coffee stops and full family grazing. Seating ranges from two‑tops along the corridor for casual bites to comfy booth nooks for longer conversations. There’s a proper bar counter up front (more on the taps in a second), and service on my visit was attentive in the right way. The team checked in a few times, never hovering; when my plate looked metaphorically licked clean, I confessed, “Savouring the savoury!

What I ate at French Fold Great World

No.12 Reblochon, organic Bayonne ham, baby potatoes, pork pancetta, white pickled onions

Winner. The buckwheat fold at French Fold Great World arrived with that tell‑tale lacey edge and a soft‑set centre. Little baby potato coins tucked under a blanket of melted Reblochon—a classic French cheese—gave texture and a creamy funk; Bayonne ham brought gentle sweetness; pancetta and white pickled onions cut through with savoury and lift. It’s hearty without being heavy—comfort with a French wink.

No.21 Classic – Brown sugar & French butter

I’m a shameless traditionalist with pancakes (sorry—crêpes). No.21 at French Fold Great World is a comfort move: warm crêpe, a pat of French butter and brown sugar melting into the grain. Good? Yes. Did it wow? For me, not this time—and that’s on me, not them. When dining out, I should have pushed bolder.

The sweet I should have ordered

Hindsight is a smug friend. The one I’d go back for at French Fold Great World: No.27 Raspberry Jam & Fresh Berries with Strawberry Gelato (gelato by Birds of Paradise). Fruity brightness, temperature contrast and a neat balance for a savoury‑led meal.

A double espresso & a “French Kiss”

I closed with a double espresso and the cheeky square of chocolate that arrives with it. As Monty Python’s Mr Creosote warns… “just one wafer‑thin mint.” Reader, I survived.

Beer, mocktails & a friendly nudge

Good news for Chef Kenno: Sapporo and Kronenbourg are on tap at $12—easy sippers with galettes. The mocktails felt a touch under‑powered on my visit; a chance, perhaps, to stock some premium zero‑proof spirits (might I suggest Zero Proof Collective)? The bar team is well‑set; a fortified N/A list would round things off.

Four savoury galettes, plated

Here’s a look at four buckwheat numbers from the pass at French Fold Great World—nice cross‑section of styles and toppings, all on that thin, naturally nutty 100% buckwheat base.

Service & pacing

Staff were on the ball, with sensible check‑ins and quick drinks. The kitchen moves steadily—galettes are made to order so give them a minute for that lovely airy‑crisp edge. Coffee was properly extracted with a clean finish, and tables turned without pressure. It’s the kind of room where you can knock out brunch fast or linger into the evening with a bottle and a couple of galettes to share.

Verdict on French Fold Great World

No.12 is the keeper—melt, savour, repeat. No.21 will always please classicists, but next time I’m going straight for No.27 with Birds of Paradise gelato. Add the $12 pints (cheers, Chef Kenno), sharpen the mocktail game, and French Fold Great World slots neatly into Great World’s eat‑play loop.
