If you're craving authentic Filipino comfort food in Bedok, you'll want to find your way to SJD Carinderia Filipino Food, tucked away at 57A New Upper Changi Rd, Singapore 462057. Owned by Jun Borromeo and his wife Shirley, this spot has quietly become a go-to for the Filipino community and anyone who loves hearty, home-style dishes.
A Carinderia with Heart
In the Philippines, a carinderia is a no-frills eatery where locals pop in for affordable, home-cooked meals. Jun and Shirley bring that same warm, family-style experience to Singapore. Their menu is extensive, with more than a dozen main dishes plus sides and add-ons. Most of the specials—like Sisig, Kaldereta, and Crispy Pata—only come alive in the evenings, so dinner time is when the stall truly shines.
Menu Highlights & Prices
Looking at the lineup, you'll see all the Filipino favourites:
Pork Specialties
- Chicharon/Lechon (Crispy Pork Belly) – $4/$7
- Adobo (Pork Stew with Spices) – $5
- Sisig (Seasoned Pork) – $6
- Giniling Na Baboy (Minced Pork) – $5
Beef & Soup
- Bisteak (Beef in Soy & Calamansi) – $6
- Kaldereta (Beef Stew) – $6
- Bulalo (Beef Bone Marrow Soup) – $8
Fish & Noodles
- Pritong Tilapia – $7–8
- Pritong Bangus (Fried Boneless Milkfish) – $4
- Bihon Guisado (Stir-fried Bihon Noodles) – $3/$5
And that's just scratching the surface. There's also a rotating list of vegetable dishes like Pinakbet, Ginisang Upo, and Chop Suey. Add-ons such as garlic rice, longganisa (Filipino sausage), or lumpia (spring rolls) make the meal even more complete.
My Visits & Experience
First Visit
I went straight for the Lechon with plain rice and one of their homemade sausages. The crispy skin and juicy pork belly were spot on, and the longganisa had that sweet-savory punch that Filipino sausages are famous for.
Second Visit
This time, I went hoping for Sisig—but it turns out it's only available in the evenings, so I'll definitely need to come back. Instead, I had their beef soup. On my first try, it was the marrow-rich Bulalo, but this time it was a lean beef version with vinegar in the broth. Totally different but equally delicious—sour, savoury, and hearty all at once.
Why You Should Go
SJD Carinderia is more than just a hawker stall; it's a slice of home for Filipinos in Singapore. Jun and Shirley keep it simple but authentic, serving the kind of dishes you'd expect to find in a Manila household rather than a commercial kitchen. Prices are very fair (most mains are $5–$8), portions are generous, and the flavours hit all the right notes—salty, sour, savoury, and always comforting.
If you're in Bedok and want to eat like a local in the Philippines, this is where you go. Just remember: the full experience comes alive at night, when the stars of the menu—Sisig, Kaldereta, and Crispy Pata—are served.
