Food Choices at Bedok Food Centre

The Halal Malay food dominates the scene at the Bedok Food Centre and trust me when I say I love that! I will of course be back to try out the Singaporean sweet dessert Cheng Tng by Ye Lai Xiang that’s been around since 1939 and another stall that has my favourite Oyster Omelette. But with so many choices and our first visit here we had to make it special and scouted around for where the queues had formed, it could not have been more obvious, read on…..!

The 3 drinks below are from left to right – Teh, Teh O-Kosong and warm water and they all cost SGD2.40 (Total Price), that’s the normal price for a single Teh in the CBD if you are lucky these days!

The queue at Satay Solo was by far the longest and was between 45 minutes and an Hour long. I can categorically say it was worth the wait! I did find a website where you can order pick up or delivery for those not prepared to wait! Satay Solo Order in advance!

Satay Solo Nasi Lemak – Bedok Food Centre

The queue for the variety of Nasi options at Satay Solo on Sunday morning around 10am was probably the longest queue I’ve waited for food, like ever!!!

The Nasi Lemak did not come with the normal fried fish but they threw in a fish ball (not the same really is it) but they had sold out already! The Sambal Chili was sooooo good, dark, smoky but sweet on the tongue! The coconut rice was light and fluffy the chicken wing crispy and not oily. Can’t yet say its the best here as we have not tried any others but felt a little let down but the basics here!

Satay Solo Best Nasi Rawon – Bedok Food Centre

I must admit I had never heard of Nasi Rawon and that is where the curiosity began! This dish originated in East Java and originally came from the beef soup (Thanks Google)!

Nasi Rawon is packed with flavours and surprises, from the crispy outer of the potato patty (begedil) to the fried beef lungs (paru) accompanied by the melt in your mouth beef tendon with an extra large helping of sambal sotong (squid)! And did I forget to mention a large helping of sambal belachan with that black coloured gravy made from buah keluak!

Now you must be thinking how on earth does he know all that information about the meal and in Bahasa, well we were sitting on a table of these lovely Malay people who gave us so many inside scoops on the food here and where it had originated from and where we could find even better Malay Food across Singapore!! Great Food and Great company, what more can you ask for on a Sunday morning!

One of the stories they told us about Ye Lai Xiang Cheng Tng was when it was at the Bedok CC the uncle used to prepare in advance the cold desserts for the Malay community when they went after they broke fast so they did not have to wait for so long!

That is why you have to love Singapore, it’s a melting pot of cultural differences and tolerance brought together by our love of food. To be honest I though the lung was beef liver but since I love Nose to Tail dining this was right up my strasse!

Best Nasi Rawon by Satay Solo at Bedok Food Centre

The Nasi Rawon costs more than the Nasi Lemak but as you can see from the number of ingredients and clearly the work that goes into making each of these addons at $7.00 it was well worth it because this is the best Malay dish I have ever had and that is saying something!

Bedok Food Centre is closing for renovations (see dates above) but I will need to revisit here before September to try this again plus its a mere 10 mins walk from my new pad. There was also another stall with a Sarawak style cooking in Bamboo that you might remember from our adventures with Emily at Kantin! This other stall had Nasi Lemak in Bamboo with a Basmati rice option, nom, nom, nom!!!

This little dish below was a stunning 9.5/10 for me! Now check out the other menu items below and go give them a visit before September!

Satay Solo Mee Siam

I returened to Satay Solo after the successful Nasi Lemak visit to give something else a try and opted for the Mee Siam! At $4 you can’t really go wrong, especially with food in Singapore priced much higher than the government claims inflation currently stands! I have to give this dish 1/10 for presentation as you can see from the below image but at $4 who is complaining how it looks, so how does it taste?

Well sadly it was warm, the noodles were precooked and placed on the plate and covered with the mee siam sauce from a bucket that’s used for keeping water warm/cold. So I was not impressed with the mee siam here and will not opt for this dish again!
