Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant: A Taste of Cantonese Comfort in Simpang Bedok

Weekends are for family so it was with great pleasure my wife and I took my Father-in-law here for some great Chinese food! We recently moved to the Simpang Bedok area which means for a foodie like me so much to eat and of course much more content for the blog, so going forward I might let the picture do more of the talking!

The Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant is not fancy by any means but it was packed with only 3 tables empty when we arrived on Saturday night around 7pm. The crowd was primarily of Chinese decent and in a Chinese restaurant you know that’s a good sign when it’s this busy!

Sliced Fish Soup

My wife had eaten here before with her colleagues especially Chinese New Year (big table, big Lo Hei or Yusheng). So first on her request list was Sliced Fish Soup! Now I have to say this type of dish is not on the top of my priority but boy was I surprised and I will be back for more of this! The image below was after we had separated it from the larger bowl. I have to say the small portion we ordered was big and enough to serve 4 to 6 along side other dishes and at $10.60 it is a bargain! in fact every dish we ordered was small but portion size is generous.

Sweet and Sour Pork

As a Brit we grew up on Cantonese Chinese food and Sweet and Sour pork is a go to for many in the UK, my wife knows this and ordered it right off the bat! This popular dish doesn’t disappoint here. The pork is crispy on the outside, tender inside, and coated in a tangy-sweet sauce. Colourful bell peppers and pineapple chunks add texture and freshness.

Oyster with Egg in Hot Plate

I threw this request in as we got to the end of our order and despite being off the cuff without much thought it was a splendid surprise to the meal. The oysters were big and juicy, the egg stuck to the hotplate giving it a crispy texture around the edges and that sauce, thick and gelatinous but rich with flavour went down a treat! It’s like my favourite Oyster Omelette on steroids (no steroids are present in this dish for the record), have to be careful with the number of POFMA’s floating around in Singapore these days!

If you want a giggle, check out the time I took Brian for Oyster Omelette in the China Town wet market with a stinking hangover!

Sambal Kang Kong

This one normally causes a stir when I order it as the wife will say we can cook at home cheaper! But I love the richness that comes with the sambal a restaurant can deliver versus home cooked food but I guess that is the amount of MSG a restaurant adds versus how we cook at home!

Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant Review

This is a family run restaurant, Food I give it a 8.5/10, as it was busy service was lacking but forgivable, 7/10 for Service! Price wise total spend was $82.40 which did include a Chinese tea and 4 can of Heineken priced at $6.50 per can, so overall good value 9/10
