We wanted somewhere practical for two people rather than an oversized apartment that we were barely going to use, which is exactly why finding the right best AirBnB was our priority.

The basics mattered more: a comfortable bed, proper bathroom, decent kitchen facilities, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a location where we could get around Tallinn easily.

The Volta Quarter studio delivered on all of those.

It is only 24m², so nobody is going to mistake it for a penthouse, but the space has been planned intelligently. It feels more like a well-designed small apartment than a bedroom where somebody has squeezed a kitchenette into the corner.

Volta Quarter Tallinn – Why We Liked the Location

One of the reasons I liked staying here—and why it ranks so highly as a best AirBnB—was that Volta does not feel like a tourist district.

You are outside Tallinn Old Town, but not so far away that getting into the centre becomes inconvenient. The surrounding area mixes new residential buildings, cafés, commercial spaces and the remains of Tallinn's industrial past.

The neighbourhood is still being developed in places, and you can see that immediately when walking around. But it feels like a district in transition rather than an abandoned building site.

There are wide pavements, landscaped areas, cycle routes and newer residential blocks throughout the neighbourhood.

Modern Tallinn Apartments Built Around Industrial History

The contrast between new and old is one of the most interesting things about Volta, and it creates a brilliant backdrop for a best AirBnB stay.

New brick and glass apartment buildings sit alongside substantial stone industrial structures that have been retained from the area's earlier life.

The broader Volta development is being built around the idea of a mixed residential and business neighbourhood, with cafés, restaurants, fitness facilities, workspaces and everyday services gradually filling in around the homes.

Volta Quarter's Industrial Past

The Volta name comes from the former factory complex, which dates back to the end of the 19th century.

For more than a century the industrial site was associated with the manufacture of electrical equipment including motors and generators.

Today the district is being repurposed, but thankfully not everything old has simply been flattened and replaced with anonymous apartment blocks.

The old stonework and industrial structures give the area considerably more personality.

The common areas are simple, bright and clean, matching the standards you would expect from the best AirBnB.

The corridors are mostly white with tiled floors and minimal decoration. It is functional rather than trying to look like a boutique hotel.

One practical point worth knowing before booking is that there is no elevator.

That was not an issue for us, but if you are carrying several large suitcases or have limited mobility it is definitely something to take into account.

Volta Quarter Self Check-In

Check-in is contactless and handled through a smart-lock system.

Before arrival, guests are required to complete the accommodation registration process. Once that is done, detailed arrival and self check-in instructions are supplied.

Standard check-in is from 16:00 and check-out is by 12:00.

Early check-in and later check-out may sometimes be available for an additional fee, subject to availability.

For 24m², the apartment uses its space very well, which is often the defining factor of a best AirBnB.

The queen bed occupies the far end of the studio beneath a large skylight, with a television and desk positioned opposite.

The pale herringbone-style flooring makes the space feel bigger, while black cabinetry and darker architectural details stop the room becoming completely white and clinical.

One of the best visual touches is the exposed historic stonework around the lower window behind the bed. That small section connects the otherwise modern apartment back to the industrial building it sits within.

The Skylight Is Excellent – With One Privacy Catch

The large overhead skylight lets a lot of natural light into what could otherwise have been quite a dark studio.

It also makes the room feel larger than its 24m² footprint.

There is one thing worth knowing though: we tended to keep the blinds closed because people staying on the floor above can potentially look down towards the bed area.

It is not a deal breaker, but I would rather tell you about it than pretend it does not exist.

Volta Quarter Studio Kitchen – More Than Enough for Two

The kitchen is one of the reasons this apartment works well for a city break.

You have a refrigerator, cooking hob, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, coffee machine, wine glasses, cooking equipment, crockery and utensils.

There is also a proper dining table for two rather than expecting guests to eat sitting on the edge of the bed.

We were in Tallinn to eat out rather than spend our holiday cooking, but having a decent fridge, coffee machine and dishwasher is still very useful.

It also makes the apartment much more practical if you are staying for longer than a couple of nights.

For us, the combination of location, facilities and sensible use of space is what puts this into the conversation for best AirBnB options in Tallinn for two people.

Yes, the Extra-Long Shoehorn Deserves a Mention

This may sound ridiculous until you use one.

The apartment had an extra-long shoehorn, and it is one of those tiny hospitality details you would never put on a list of reasons to book somewhere.

Trust me, once you start using one to put your shoes on without bending yourself in half, you suddenly understand why they exist.

Every apartment should have one.

Volta Quarter Bathroom – Heated Floor for the Win

The bathroom is compact but modern and well designed.

You have a proper shower, modern fittings, towels, storage and the expected toiletries.

The standout feature for me was the heated flooring.

Heated bathroom floors are one of those things you do not think you need until you have them. Then every cold tiled bathroom afterwards suddenly feels like somebody forgot something.

INTI Café at Volta – Our Local Coffee Pick

One of the useful things about staying in Volta is that you do not need to head into central Tallinn every time you want coffee—a huge benefit when booking the best AirBnB.

INTI Café is extremely close and became our obvious local choice.

Papermill Coffee is also nearby and gets plenty of attention, but personally I preferred INTI. It was nearer, cheaper and more cosy.

For a quick coffee before heading out for the day, that convenience matters.

Selver Supermarket, Cafés & Everyday Essentials

For self-catering at your best AirBnB, there are supermarkets and other everyday services within walking distance.

Selver supermarket is nearby, while Arsenali Shopping Centre is also within easy reach for groceries, shops and food.

The wider Volta development includes or is adding fitness facilities, cafés, restaurants and other services, so the area is becoming increasingly self-contained.

Does the best AirBnB in Tallinn Need to Be in Old Town?

Not necessarily. One of the reasons this apartment worked so well was that we could stay outside the busiest part of Old Town without making transport difficult.

Public transport connections around Volta and Krulli make central Tallinn straightforward to reach, while Old Town is roughly ten minutes away depending on the route and transport you choose.

Telliskivi is also nearby, and the Noblessner seafront area can be reached on foot.

We liked having the choice of public transport, walking or using one of Tallinn's scooters rather than being dependent on taxis.

Noblessner, Telliskivi & Tallinn Restaurants Nearby

This part of Tallinn also puts you within easy reach of several areas worth exploring in their own right.

Noblessner has the marina, seafront and restaurants, while Telliskivi provides another concentration of cafés, bars, shops and places to eat.
