Book Rataskaevu 16Some restaurants become so heavily recommended that you start wondering whether they can possibly live up to it. Rataskaevu 16 Tallinn is one of those places.
Located in Tallinn Old Town, the restaurant sits among cobbled streets and historic buildings, but inside things are considerably more straightforward: exposed brick, old stone walls, wooden tables and a restaurant that seems considerably more interested in what is coming out of the kitchen than manufacturing an Instagram backdrop.
Rataskaevu 16 Tallinn Interior & First Impressions
The interior is one of the reasons the restaurant works so well. It does not feel over-designed. Exposed brick, stone walls, simple shelving and practical furniture fit the building rather than fighting against it.
There are different levels and smaller dining areas, giving Rataskaevu 16 a more intimate feel than you might expect from a restaurant with such a big reputation.
The restaurant was clearly busy during our visit. This is one of those Tallinn restaurants where I would book rather than simply turning up and hoping for the best.
Rataskaevu 16 Tallinn Service – Small Details Done Properly
The service deserves its own section because it was one of the strongest parts of the meal.
It was attentive without becoming intrusive. Staff checked in when needed, knew the menu and kept things moving, but there was none of that constant hovering that can ruin an otherwise good lunch.
What stood out were the handwritten notes. At the end of the meal, our receipt came back with a message thanking us for our energy and wishing us well for the rest of our Tallinn trip.
Then my Double Americano arrived with another handwritten note tucked underneath the cup:
"May this cup of energy keep you going exactly until it is sleeping time!"
Simple stuff, but effective. It felt personal rather than manufactured.
Rataskaevu 16 Estonian Black Bread & Butter
We started with the table bread.
Estonian dark bread has become one of those simple things I increasingly look forward to when eating around Estonia. Here it arrived sliced on a wooden board with butter alongside it.
No unnecessary complication. Good dark bread, proper crust, butter. Job done.
Rataskaevu 16 Fish Soup – €10.80
For one of our starters, we ordered the fish soup at €10.80.
This was not a heavy cream-based soup. It came as a clear broth with smoked eel, salmon, asparagus, kohlrabi and herbs.
The broth allowed the ingredients to remain identifiable instead of everything disappearing underneath cream or butter. It was simple, clean and exactly the right sort of starter before the heavier mains that followed.
Rataskaevu 16 Three-Cheese Pie – €11.80
The second starter was the three-cheese pie at €11.80.
This came with broccolini, carrot, walnut, spinach and an olive oil sauce, making it considerably more interesting than the words "cheese pie" might suggest.
The pastry was crisp outside with the cheese inside, while the vegetables stopped the dish becoming too rich.
It was also well presented without looking as though somebody had spent ten minutes attacking the plate with tweezers.
Rataskaevu 16 Beef Tenderloin – €31.80
The beef tenderloin was €31.80 and came with a savoy cabbage roll, fennel cream, marinated shallot onion and cognac sauce.
This was the more familiar of our two mains, but the kitchen still gave it enough personality through the accompaniments.
The beef was cooked properly, which is ultimately what matters most when ordering tenderloin. The cabbage roll and fennel cream added something different without hiding the meat underneath unnecessary extras.
Rataskaevu 16 Braised Elk Roast – €28.60
If you are eating in Estonia and braised elk appears on the menu, ordering something you could have almost anywhere else seems like a missed opportunity.
So elk it was.
The braised elk roast cost €28.60 and came with potato and beetroot gratin, marinated garlic, plum and a blackcurrant and mustard sauce.
This was the heavier and more traditionally local of our two mains. The elk had been braised long enough to soften properly, while the fruit and mustard elements brought sweetness and acidity against the meat.
The potato and beetroot gratin was particularly good and gave the plate a distinctly northern European identity.
Between our two mains, this is the one I would order again. Not because there was anything wrong with the beef, but because the elk felt much more specific to eating in Estonia.
Rataskaevu 16 Drinks & Alcohol-Free Options
The drinks programme is more interesting than you might expect from a restaurant that already receives so much attention for its food.
Alongside its wider drinks list, there are several carefully constructed alcohol-free options using ingredients such as grapefruit, thyme, sea buckthorn, blackcurrant, basil, lime and sparkling water.
Alcohol-Free Cocktails at Rataskaevu 16
What I liked was that these were not treated as an afterthought. The combinations use herbs, acidity, bitterness and fruit rather than simply throwing several sweet juices together.
Bitterly Sober – €7 combines grapefruit, lime, sparkling water and thyme.
Daily Dose – €7 uses sea buckthorn, blackcurrant, lime, tonic water and thyme.
Vitamin Bomb – €7 combines fresh orange juice, strawberry-rhubarb, lime and basil.
That is exactly the sort of approach I like seeing from restaurants that take non-alcoholic drinks seriously.
Rataskaevu 16 Coffee, Tea & Another Handwritten Note
We kept our own drinks simple:
Tea – €4.00
Double Americano – €4.00
The Americano was also where Rataskaevu 16 delivered one of those little hospitality touches that sticks in your mind more than something far more expensive.
Our Rataskaevu 16 Bill – €91 for Two
- Fish soup: €10.80
- Three-cheese pie: €11.80
- Braised elk roast: €28.60
- Beef tenderloin: €31.80
- Tea: €4.00
- Double Americano: €4.00
- Total: €91.00
For two starters, two substantial mains and drinks in one of Tallinn Old Town's best-known restaurants, I thought €91 represented good value.
This is not budget food, obviously, but neither did it feel as though Rataskaevu 16 was applying an excessive Old Town tourist premium simply because it could.
Rataskaevu 16 Tallinn Review – Final Verdict
Rataskaevu 16 Tallinn justified the hype for us.
The food was consistent across all four dishes. The elk gave us something genuinely local. The beef was handled properly. Both starters were sensibly priced and well executed.
Then there was the service.
Those handwritten notes might seem like tiny details, but they tell you quite a lot about how this restaurant approaches hospitality. They cost virtually nothing, yet somebody has taken the time to make the experience personal.
That combination of solid food, fair pricing, an atmospheric Old Town setting and staff who actually seem to care explains why Rataskaevu 16 remains so popular.
I would absolutely return.

Rataskaevu 16 Has a Second Tallinn Restaurant
One useful thing to know is that the group actually operates two restaurants in Tallinn.
The restaurant reviewed here is the original Rataskaevu 16 at Rataskaevu 16, 10123 Tallinn.
The second restaurant is:
Väike Rataskaevu
Address: Niguliste 6, 10130 Tallinn, Estonia
Telephone: +372 601 1311
Email: vaike@rataskaevu16.ee
The two should not be confused when making your reservation, particularly as both are located within Tallinn Old Town.

Based on how busy the restaurant was during our visit, I would definitely make a reservation rather than relying on a walk-in table.
